Case Study 1 - Peace and Development

The Kalinaw sa Mindanao program in Sarangani Province, Philippines is one of a series of government interventions aimed at creating so-called "peace and development centres" -- transforming formerly areas of conflict and violence into models of transformative practice. In the past years there has been a significant mobilisation of NPOs, GOs and other external funders all gathered under a single umbrella purpose. In this video Jola talks about her experience first as a volunteer then as Program Head of the Kalinaw sa Mindanao. She stresses again the importance of designers and implementers, of owning the program first, of visualising it happening and getting sustained.

Jocelyn Lambac-Kanda's leadership of the Kalinaw sa Mindanao program has brought her numerous accolades including the 2008 peace studies fellowship in Chicago, USA.

When asked what she thinks is the first step towards engaging the stakeholders Jola answered "the self" without any hint of hesitation. With peace and development it is of paramount importance that the program implementors feel their value in the system and genuinely envision how crucial meeting the goal of the program is, she added. "So how can you make them feel the absence of peace?"
